Elixir - Winter Issue 2024 -
This is a project I've made for the Sword & Scales Magazine's Winter Issue, with a really rough timeline. This is a quarterly magazine with in-depth stories about liberty, equality, and justice. The goal was the make 7 illustrations which represents what is each article about.
The style reflects the vintage circuses, the late 1800's & early 1900's snake oil ads with a hint of Steampunk at the same time needed to draw some inspiration from the Wizard of Oz with a lot of detail. Like the Flying house, Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Witch of the East, Tin Man, The Wizard's machine.
'In The Wizard of Oz, the Wizard is a conman who claims to be all-knowing and -powerful, with the ability to solve everyone’s problems. Even as he was writing 125 years ago, Frank Baum understood the allure of the charlatan, pulling levers we can’t see and making promises he’ll never keep.'

How often does the government promise snake-oil solutions to real problems—only to disappoint people by making problems worse instead of better?
